Hitherto, the excise duty on tapioca starch and maize starch was nil, while it was 8% on potato starch.

The Union Budget 2010-11 provides for uniform 4% excise duty on tapioca starch, maize starch and potato starch.

The major producers of maize starch are Riddhi Siddhi Gluco Boils, Sukhjit Starch & Chemicals, Universal Starch Chem Allied etc. These players were enjoying nil excise duty on their maize starch, which will now suffer excise duty of 4%.
