Indeed, Dr. Ambedkar touched dizzy heights in the political field as well and he interacted with Mahatma Gandhi on matters of national importance. Little wonder then, that this birthday is still a public holiday in additional to inciting his millions of followers into a frenzy of celebrations. Dr. Jabbar Patel has approached a subject, which could have been fiercely controversial, in cool, calm headed and honest manner - and it is this approach which has reaped rich dividends - artistically as also as a significant segment of Indian history. His choice of Mammootty for the title role and his obsession with Dr. Ambedkar appearance are pointers to how sincerely he has treated this film. Furthermore, his pursuit of perfection over matters pertaining to that period not only creates an authentic ambience but also imbues the entire film with a look as well as feel which distinguish the film and make it an unforgettable experience. Not once, does the viewer get the impression that he is watching something that does not quite fall in the realm of entertainment per se. And that is no mean achievement. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of both the Government of India and Government of Maharashtra deserve to take a bow for financing an unusual subject with unstinted ardour.
