ADR Report-ADRs edge higher, led by energy, miners

By Kristina Cooke

NEW YORK, Jan 3 (Reuters) - U.S.-listed shares of overseas companies edged higher on Thursday, helped by strong U.S. economic data and gains in miners and energy shares.

Energy companies such as BP <BP.N> and Royal Dutch Shell <RDSa.N> rose as oil steadied near the $100-a-barrel mark. BHP Billiton <BHP.N> and Gold Fields Ltd <GFI.N> climbed on high commodity prices.

But airlines' American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) -- which were hurt by higher fuel costs -- kept the advance in check. Air France-KLM <AKH.N> dropped 1.5 percent to $34.08, while China South Air <ZNH.N> fell 2.3 percent to $63.83.

The Bank of New York's index of leading ADRs <.BKADR> was up 0.2 percent, while the 30-share Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 0.2 percent.

U.S. stocks rose after data showing a larger-than-expected rise in new orders at factories in November eased worries about the economy. For details, see [.N].

The Bank of New York's index of leading European ADRs <.BKEUR> was up 0.3 percent. In Europe, shares traded lower, dragged down by banks and retailers. [.EU]

Royal Dutch Shell ADRs rose 1.7 percent to $85.49, while BP was up 2.1 percent at $74.94. BHP Billiton gained 1.5 percent to $71.51 and Gold Fields climbed 3.8 percent to $15.98.

Swiss agrochemical producer Syngenta's <SYT.N> ADRs rose 5 percent to $53.15 after U.S. rival Monsanto <MON.N> reported a sharply higher quarterly profit and raised its 2008 forecast. [ID:nN03212568]

The Bank of New York's index of leading Asian ADRs <.BKAS> was up 0.05 percent. In Asia, shares ended mixed.

Tata Motors <TTM.N> ADRs rose 1.3 percent to $19.71 after Ford Motor Co <F.N> said the Indian company was the front-runner to buy its European brands Jaguar and Land Rover. [ID:nL03141022]

Receipts with the Bank of New York's index of leading Latin American ADRs <.BKLA> rose 0.2 percent. In Latin America, major benchmarks were little changed.

Brazilian miner Vale <RIO.N> gained 2 percent to $33.35. (([email protected]; +1 646 223 6154; Reuters Messaging: [email protected])) ((Multimedia versions of Reuters Top News are now available for:
