On 25 December 2007, a report titled "Prospects of SSIs in 2008 vis-a-vis other Booming Sector" by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) revealed that the share of small scale industries (SSI) in India's manufacturing sector may contract as newer technologies, trade barries and strict quality norms hit their competitiveness.According to the study, SSIs will encounter a gloom period, beginning 2008 as its contribution to manufacturing will come down to 35% compared with 40% of now and over 45% preceding year until 2006-07.
The report noted that due to lack of proper policies, exports of SSIs would decline 7-8% as the inputs being produced by the entire sector are costing to their supplier higher by over 6-7%.
