NEW YORK, Dec 27 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks extended losses after midday on Thursday, with the S&P 500 and Dow industrials now down 1 percent with the Nasdaq, pressured by financial stocks after an analyst warned of larger write-offs in the sector and by an assassination in Pakistan.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 159.49 points, or 1.18 percent, at 13,392.20. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 15.33 points, or 1.02 percent, at 1,482.33.
