1630 ET 29Jun07-CBOE VIX jumps, reflecting anxiety ahead of weekend
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The CBOE Volatility Index <.VIX> saw a big jump as stocks sold off Friday
afternoon. The indicator, called Wall Street's fear gauge, which measures
projected stock market volatility conveyed by S&P 500 option prices, added 4.83
percent to 16.29.
"Some of the action in the stock market appears to be position-squaring
after a strong second quarter and nothing alarming," said Optionetics analyst
Frederic Ruffy. But there seems to be "some angst" ahead of the weekend after
two car bombs were found in London and New York City was placed on a heightened
state of security, he said.
The brokers, including Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs and Bear Stearns -- are
also under pressure, on concerns about exposure to the subprime market.
