China will raise export tariffs on some steel products from January 1 to help rein in a record trade surplus and reduce energy consumption and pollution.Export duties on hot-rolled coil and the so-called long products will be raised to 15% from between 5% and 10%. Tariffs on semi-finished products, billets and pig iron will be raised to 25% from 15%. Steel-product exports from China fell 11% to 4.1 million tonnes in November, the lowest in 14 months.
